Travel Myanmar – where to go and what to do

Myanmar (Burma) gets more and more travelers as it is still kind of unpolluted from the mass tourism. The country was isolated from the rest of the world during the military rule. This makes it even more interesting to travel Myanmar. How will the people react when they see tourist? How friendly are they? What do they have to tell? I was very surprised what I found in Myanmar – the friendliest people on my South East Asia tour!

Yangon

A good place to start if you fly in by plane. Yangon is also famous for the shwedagon pagoda.

Kalaw & Inle Lake

Most travelers visit Kalaw to do a trekking tour to Inle Lake. It is a small town and good to stock up supplies.

Bagan

Bagan is my cultural highlight as you can explore hundreds of temples by yourself. Do not miss this.

Mandalay

From Mandalay you get by boat to Mingung where you will find the greatest intact bell in the world and other sights.

How to get to Myanmar?

Fly either to Yangon or Mandalay. Both airports are international. I found cheap flight connections from Bangkok (check both airports BKK and DMK – there is a shuttle bus connecting both airports for free with your airline ticket). From Yangon airport I took a taxi to the city centre which was fairly cheap and convenient.

Traveling by bus in Myanmar

bus in Myanmar

Within Myanmar traveling by bus is a good and cheap opportunity. They are very convenient with sleeping seats and Multimedia Entertainment Systems on board. Check  for connections and prices. We always booked at the places where we stayed over night. They can also arrange a taxi which takes you to the bus terminal.
